What is Aloe Vera?

Originally from the Arabian Peninsula, aloe vera is actually an herb that grows wild in tropical climates around the world. It is well-known for its moisturizing and soothing properties, making it a natural choice for botanical beauty products.

In fact, aloe vera has been used in beauty products for more than five thousand years. Egyptians were among the first to use aloe vera, calling it the ‘plant of immortality’, because it can live and bloom without soil. It’s even believed that Cleopatra used aloe vera in her daily beauty routine. Aloe vera wasn’t only used in ancient Egypt. Native Americans used aloe vera as well, referring to it as ‘the wand of heaven’. Mahatma Gandhi was also a well-known aloe vera fan! If you’re an aloe fan, you’re in good company.

Aloe vera leaves are full of a gel-like substance which contains most of the plant’s bioactive compounds, such as vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids. With all of these natural components, aloe vera is traditionally used for burns and wounds.

Where does aloe vera come from?

While originally from the Arabian Peninsula, today aloe vera is grown in tropical climates worldwide. It can be found in the USA, Latin America, Australia, Africa, the Caribbean, India, and in Southern Europe. It cannot survive freezing ground temperatures, so the coldest Europe countries were the last to discover the natural benefits of aloe vera.

All aloe leaves are hand-picked, and the farmers are removing only 2 to 3 leaves per plant at one time. And there is 6x more* aloe in our aloe & eucalyptus collection!
